Thermal transfer ribbons are needed to produce thermal transfer labels. It is these tags which are used on all manner of goods throughout many different industries and their importance can never be under estimated. They are available for foodstuffs, hardware and just about anything that a consumer will want to buy at one point or another.

Even these come in three different varieties too which are wax, resin and wax-resin. All have their own individual uses so it is important to find out what the tag is being used for so that the right one can be chosen. Indeed, the finish on the tags range from scratch proof, not scratch proof and those high quality tags which can even have pictures printed on them. All have their place in the retail world where it is probably the non scratch proof ones which are used for fast-moving goods where it does not matter if the tag is easily defaced.

Some of these systems actually have to have FDA approval even if they do not come into direct contact with food. However, such is the quality that the FDA demands that nothing can seep through the wrapping to contaminate the food itself.

For other kinds of tags, there are the usual printers which can be used and are able to take on multi tasks depending on what the tags are used for. They cannot, however, produce single tags and this is why people usually go for the other varieties.

The dot matrix variety prints out tiny dots in rows to make up the detail on the tags. Although this is quite a cheap way of producing the tags, they do tend to 'bleed' so it may be unsuitable for barcode tags which we are all very used to. These do tend to need a lot of maintenance though and this is why people get fed up with using them after some time.

The laser variety is also used for high-speed production of tags. These work much like photocopiers and they can usually produce images at speed. They work by having charged ions, in the shape of the words or images to be put on the tag, aimed at the special paper then when it goes through the machine, the toner is attracted to the charged ions. These are usually used for any kind of document which also includes bar codes because the resolution is really quite high.

The ink jet printer is also used quite often in the home setting. These are remarkably slow so they are not really advisable for multi tag printing. Indeed, anyone who has ever owned one of these will surely know how difficult they are to work with. They also are very sensitive to dusty or dirty atmospheres so they can prove to be a little unreliable at times. Even vibrations are not handled well so one has to take care if using these.

Finally, there are great suppliers of these printers and services available online so take a look to see which ones offer the best prices etc.
