People who are self-employed realize how precious time can be when it comes to being profitable. Every minute that passes can be a minute that you make additional income, so it is imperative that time not be wasted. One of the benefits to self-employment is claiming your time back for yourself, so the more time you can save during your work day, the more time you have for yourself and for your family. The challenge is managing everything when you are self-employed. When you are running your own small company, most of the responsibilities fall on your shoulders. While a larger business may have an accounting and marketing department, you are responsible for these tasks, in addition to your actual workload, when you are self-employed. Luckily, there are some ways you can cut down on the time wasted when it comes to administrative tasks and time-consuming work. Start by using an online invoicing or online billing service. This will save you the effort of notifying clients when it is time to pay.

Another way to save time is to hire freelance workers. Instead of trying to do all of the work yourself, look for part-time help. You can pay freelancers on the project basis, so you do not have to worry about losing money when you are not busy or paying for employee benefits. When you come to a busy time in your schedule, call on someone to handle a few of the tasks that take up your time so you can focus on what is most important.

One of the biggest challenges the self-employed face is sticking to a schedule. Because you have complete control over your work day, you may let the world carry you in different places. Sometimes this is necessary and one of the benefits to being self-employed is being able to pick up the kids from school, get your spouse from work, grocery shop in the middle of the afternoon or have lunch with a friend. However, sticking to a set schedule is important. This helps you work efficiently and allows you to plan for the day ahead because you know what to expect.

If you are working from home, be sure you have a workspace dedicated to working. There is nothing worse than trying to get in a day's worth of work at the kitchen table while your family goes about their lives around you. You need to be able to shut the door and close out the rest of the world. If you live alone, your options for working at home are plentiful and you can really move to whatever room in your house that is most comfortable. However, it is important to set up a base where you keep your financial records and other important paperwork.

Finally, as a self-employed person, it might be tough to say no to jobs. However, if you are taking on tasks that are low-paying and time-consuming, it may be time to look elsewhere. As scary as it may be turning down work, that time would be better spent searching for higher paying jobs.
