If you love adventure travels, the idea of a kayak vacation floating down the river is probably your idea of the best vacation possible. If you have a trip like this coming up though, it is important that you make the proper preparations and take the proper precautions. Having the right kayak accessories can make or break the trip. If any of your kayak hardware breaks and you are not prepared for that, your trip will very quickly turn from one of the best to one of the worst in no time at all.
First of all, you cannot plan for your trip by assuming it will be a leisurely ride down a slow, sedate river. That may be your plan, and it may even appear as though that is how the river will be that day, but you really do not have any guarantees. If you are going to be in a boat all day, you need to be prepared for the worse case.
The number one item that you should always have with you is a life jacket of some kind. Many people think that the fact that they are a strong swimmer is enough for them to be able to skip this important accessory, but it is not true. Every river has its share of obstacles and even experienced kayakers occasionally get knocked over. Anyone could get tipped over and hit your head on a rock, which could knock yourself out. You might even get thrown off balance and hit your head on an overhanging tree. If that unfortunate event happens, your strong swimming skills will have no value, but a life jacket does.
Another essential item that must be part of your gear is a quality rope. Do not skimp on this, even though it is tempting. If you are in a position where you need a rope it is likely because you are stuck somewhere and you need someone to help you by pulling you out of the river or towing you. If you need assistance like this you are already in trouble of some kind. If your cheap rope breaks, you are in even worse trouble.
You should always have a cell phone with you and it is essential that you keep it in something that is waterproof. If something happens and you need help, it is important that you can call someone to come and help you. However, if your phone gets water on it when you tip over, it would not be of much help to you. It is also important and frequently forgotten to make sure that your phone is fully charged before you leave for your kayak trip. Another note about cell phones, in addition to it being in some kind of a waterproof container, it also has to be easily accessible to you. You also have to make sure though, that if you tip over, your phone does not go floating down the river. It could also sink to the bottom of the river if you do not store it properly.
